2008 Marcarini Barolo Brunate (Updated)

I am, of course, biased when it comes to Barolo. I prefer wines with little to no new oak, freshness  instead of power, and austerity instead of sweetness. I’m a big fan of Old School Baroli. This bottle;  Still relatively young, needed some time to open up. Typical fine tannins, found some cherries, a little tar and perhaps roses, with a nice hint of tobacco. The wine has a broad and emphatic balsamic richness with nuances of menthol and a meaty kind of feel, while still maintaining a freshness and zip. A great Barolo with potential and real good value for money IMO. This wine will improve over the coming years, currently at beginning of it’s drinking window. 1998 Roagna Barbaresco Crichët Pajé, DOCG

I admit to being a Nebbiolophile and in this expensive and highly appreciated top Barbaresco you will find all the expected traditional, and for the Nebbiolo grape typical references to varying degrees; roses, dried cherries, leather, violets and perhaps a hint of tar, but no truffles. This bottle (slow ox’d for 7 hours) was robust, but pure, with floral and mineral notes, opulent but not forceful in any way with splendid tannins present. This is a truly great wine, mature and balanced with great complexity, earthy of course, with an elegant finish with nuances of acid berries and also an inkling of citrus bergamia aromas. This wine is drinking beautifully today IMO, and possibly better than ever? I will enjoy the remaining few bottles over the next couple of years, but perhaps keep one for the long run.. The estate was founded in the late 19th century by Commendatore Giovanni Battista Burlotto who made the wine himself until his death in 1927. The Commendatore’s wines were highly esteemed in the early 20th century and they rivaled French Bordeaux for space in well-stocked European cellars. After his death the estate lapsed and Burlotto wines lost prestige. Today, however, G.B. Burlotto wines are once again highly acclaimed thanks to the work of Fabio Alessandria, the founder’s great-great-grandson. 1988 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Vintage Rare. Rather dark colour and very little fizz. Mature, balanced and complex with a slight hint of mushrooms. Very good đŸŸđŸ˜Š, but the drinking window is closing...   Rare Vintage 1988 This Vintage is made up from twenty villages all classified as Premiers or Grands Crus. They are located in the CĂŽte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims regions. The dominance and power comes from the Pinot Noir, which represents 68% of the blend. The finesse and elegance are achieved from a complement of 32% Chardonnay. The effervescence is both delicate and long lasting. The bouquet is fine and complex, strong in the aromas of dried fruits and flowers. There is an elegant harmony in the nose around toast and brioche notes. 2005 Luigi Pira Barolo Vigna Rionda. Still rather dark colour, but with a slight orange/ brick edge. Truffles, roses, black fruit and tar with a hint of minerals. Oak a bit to prominent, but nice! Per Kamperin
