2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

Image
2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato. Classic and typical with cherries, spice, soil, tar and leather. Concentrated with complex nuances. Great Barolo. Many years to go… Monprivato is one of the most distinctive Barolos around.  It boasts a level of elegance, clarity of expression and beautifully nuanced complexity that's heartbreaking. There's a unique and very compelling mingling of fruit, flower and earth with an incredible finesse.  The life of Monprivato is legendary.  It can age for decades. Over time, it shows its breeding to an even greater extent and gets even more beautifully aromatic and transparent. With time, a beguiling depth and perfume emerges.  2004 is a very strong vintage for Piedmont, but even in this context the Monprivato is brilliant.  Few wines reached this level of refinement and delineation. 2007 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate - Le Coste

Image
2007 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate - Le Coste, a wine worth devoting yourself to… ”Powerful, complex and multi-faceted - red fruit, leather, cherries, blackberries, herbs, tar, orange peel, a hint of medicinal tones and a floral touch and perhaps also some meaty and animal features.. First labelled and sold as a single-vineyard wine in   1934, Brunate is one of the Grand Crus of the Langhe region, even if the classification has not yet been made. Why? Because of its ability to deliver high quality fruit year-in, year-out. It is at the base of the La Morra slope, in a plum south amphiteatro which generates plenty of steamy heat by day and because of its position low down, it chills down quickly by night, preserving the perfumes and extending the hang-time.

Barolo OtinFiorin Piè Rupestris.

Image
The vineyards in Gabutti in Serralunga d’Alba are unanimously regarded as one of the most prestigious ‘crus’ of the Barolo-producing area.  They are located at the centre of a land with an extraordinary vocation for growing nebbiolo, a vine which produces wines with remarkable character and structure perfect for ageing.  This is the birthplace of Barolo OtinFiorin Piè Rupestris: it is 100% Serralunga in its character ‒ a paradigmatic wine thanks to its severe and authoritative tone, with an austere but also generous and sharing manner ‒ as well as in the organoleptic characteristics: liquorice, juniper, tar, balsamic notes, spices and undergrowth are just the most recognisable and typical expressions of an aromatic patrimony which sketches, year after year, a veritable narration of the land.  This is made authentic and trustworthy by our unequivocally natural choices and by an attitude alien to mediation. A narration which changes and evolves in time, under the sig...

Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill - Vintage 1995

Image
Honey, mushrooms, brioche and perhaps a hint of buttered popcorn — complex with a hint of autumn. Fully mature. Acidity and bubbles fading, near it’s peak. Great Champagne,  Copyright — Per Kamperin Winemaker Notes: The Vintage Brut 1995 is rich, powerful and flavorsome with an expressive palate. In style and qualityis not unlike one of its illustrious predecessors, the 1985. It has an intense, radiant golden color with traces of warm amber. There is a persistent stream of very fine, regular sized bubbles that rise upwards to a delicate, full durable ‘cordon’ at the rim. Initially discreet, even closed, its nose combine an extreme delicacy with subtle complexity, skillfully combining some gentle, leafy aromas (straw, cut flowers) and equally understated dried fruit aromas (almonds, apricots) before blossoming into an abundance of competing aromas: fruity (fruit candy), lactic (beurrre noisette) and spicy (mille-fleurs honey, ginge...

2008 Marcarini Barolo Brunate (Updated)

Image
I am, of course, biased when it comes to Barolo. I prefer wines with little to no new oak, freshness  instead of power, and austerity instead of sweetness. I’m a big fan of Old School Baroli. This bottle;  Still relatively young, needed some time to open up. Typical fine tannins, found some cherries, a little tar and perhaps roses, with a nice hint of tobacco. The wine has a broad and emphatic balsamic richness with nuances of menthol and a meaty kind of feel, while still maintaining a freshness and zip. A great Barolo with potential and real good value for money IMO. This wine will improve over the coming years, currently at beginning of it’s drinking window. First labelled and sold as a single-vineyard wine in 1934, Brunate is one of the Grand Crus of the Langhe region. Why? Because of its ability to deliver high quality fruit year-in, year-out. 2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato

Image
2004 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato. The definition of a ”Unicorn Wine”, elegant and complex, though still at beginning of drinking window IMO. Slow oxed (10h) & another 30 min in the glass before drinking, paired with self-picked wild Swedish Chanterelles on toast. Nice pairing IMO and in this bottle we found, as expected, notes of leather, roses, truffle and perhaps also a hint of tea-leafs and tobacco. Great Barolo!

1998 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses.

Image
Maison Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses comes from one of the few enclosed sites of the Champagne region. The 1998 vintage is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay. Label — Copyright Per Kamperin Despite extremely contrasted weather conditions, the 1998 Clos de Goisses is a powerful, rich champagne. This intense golden champagne revealed interesting and complex aromas of ripe white fruits, flowers, mineral, some biscuits and, surpringly, a slight hint of mushrooms. Slightly oxidative with a long finish. This wine still needs time, but is definitely complete already, just between ”freshness” and ”maturity”. Bottle — Copyright Per Kamperin Winemakers notes (general): Clos des Goisses is the most powerful of all Champagnes. It is produced using grapes grown on a unique, pure chalk hillside with a 45° slope facing due south, in Mareuil-sur-Ay. Its name certainly reveals its true nature; in the old Champagne dialect, Gois or Goisse means a very steep slope. This ...

Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs — a vertical comparison of this great Champagne

Image
In Champagne, the term Blanc de Blancs designates Champagnes made only from Chardonnay grapes. A classic Blanc de Blancs is restrained and elegant when young, yet with ageing it develops a mouth-coating brioche richness that overlays an intense expression of fruitiness. Pol Roger’s vintage Blanc de Blanc is produced in small quantities from Grand Cru vineyards. Interestingly, it is never produced in magnums, just single bottles. Pol Roger — Blanc de Blancs 1996 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Fully mature, rich and complex with a long finish. Apricots, brioche, bready with a hint of yeast. Very good! Vintage 1996 1998 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Balanced fruitiness and still fresh, powerful with a buttery and mineral nose. Big champagne! Vintage 1998 1999 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs. Perfect drinking now, but could be enjoyed over the next 10 years. Lively bubbles, white peach, ...

1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill.

Image
Pol Roger launched its deluxe flagship at Churchill’s birthplace Blenheim Palace in 1984, with the 1975 vintage, in commemorative homage to his love of its wines, and it remains the only prestige cuvée Champagne named after a foreigner. That first Cuvée Sir Winston was made only in magnum and sold only in the UK; standard bottles, and sales to the USA and elsewhere, came only from the 1979 vintage on. Each declared vintage numbers only 25,000–50,000 bottles—a tiny quantity by comparison. 1996 Salon “Le Mesnil” Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

Image
This is one of my absolute favourite champagnes . Fresh and clean on the palate and made to age for many years. Aromas of fresh citrus and green apples and lots of chalky mineral notes. L ayers upon layers of concentrated sweet fruit with a generous mousse.  Will hold for many years, drink over the next 10 years? Copyright Per Kamperin (My collection.) Winemakers notes The 1996 Salon is a pale yellow color with a touch of green. It is clear and lively, with fine, persistent bubbles and a stunning bouquet. Initially, the nose offers hints of green apple, which soon develop into lemon and grapefruit combined with pear and kiwi notes. The wine is complex and refreshing on the palate, displaying a burst of minerality. This is a well-made, rich, powerful Champagne, all-encompassing yet subtle, with contained strength. According to Didier Depond, Salon should be served in a tulip-shaped glass instead of a traditional champagne flute. “Because of the richness and c...

2006 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

Image
2006 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero. Firm classic style, a fabulous effort from Burlotto. Still young, but a truly great wine! https://perskamperin.tumblr.com/post/188443436575/2006-comm-gb-burlotto-barolo-monvigliero-firm G.B. Burlotto in Verduno has a storied past. The estate was founded in the late 19th century by Commendatore Giovanni Battista Burlotto who made the wine himself until his death in 1927. The Commendatore’s wines were highly esteemed in the early 20th century and they rivaled French Bordeaux for space in well-stocked European cellars. After his death the estate lapsed and Burlotto wines lost prestige. Today, however, G.B. Burlotto wines are once again highly acclaimed thanks to the work of Fabio Alessandria, the founder’s great-great-grandson. The 37-acres of vineyards are planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cabernet Sauvignon and Freisa, a red grape native to Piedmont. The Monvigliero Vineyard produces some of Burlotto’s most sought-after B...
