1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill.

Pol Roger launched its deluxe flagship at Churchill’s birthplace Blenheim Palace in 1984, with the 1975 vintage, in commemorative homage to his love of its wines, and it remains the only prestige cuvée Champagne named after a foreigner. That first Cuvée Sir Winston was made only in magnum and sold only in the UK; standard bottles, and sales to the USA and elsewhere, came only from the 1979 vintage on. Each declared vintage numbers only 25,000–50,000 bottles—a tiny quantity by comparison.

With great pride, the house of Pol Roger created this prestige cuvée to honor Sir Winston and the wine is made in a style of which he would approve. The friendship between Champagne-house Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to the 1928 vintage. Sir Winston Churchill had a lifelong “attachment” to Pol Roger champagne and insisted on enjoying the champagne at the most dangerous and dark periods of wartime. He (very) famously borrowed a slogan of Napoleon’s to describe his passion for this supremely invigorating champagne: “In defeat I need it, in victory I deserve it”.

Notes: Nice fruit on the palate, vibrant and fresh, ending with more mature toasted nuances. Will be stunning at peak maturity. Very complex with layers of aroma: mandarin, oysters, chocolate, brioche and nuts. Opened up and revealed its potential — drinking window: 2016–2035.
