Being a dedicated ‘Barolophile’, I have seen that demand and appreciation for Nebbiolo has skyrocketed the last ten years. As prices have risen for the best Barolos and Barbarescos (the most famous Nebbiolo wines) wine-lovers have looked out for alternatives, but Nebbiolo, unlike many other grapes, has never really prospered outside (northwestern) Italy. The Nebbiolo grape has long been associated with the Piedmont region, but alpine regions like Valtellina in Lombardy offer an interesting alternative. Valtellina Within the Valtellina zone, where Nebbiolo is known as ”Chiavennasca”, the wines are defined by two basic quality levels. The base is the Valtellina, which generally tends to be light-bodied and tannic. A distinct step up, with richer textures and more complex flavors, is the Valtellina Superiore. 1988 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Vintage Rare. Rather dark colour and very little fizz. Mature, balanced and complex with a slight hint of mushrooms. Very good đŸŸđŸ˜Š, but the drinking window is closing...   Rare Vintage 1988 This Vintage is made up from twenty villages all classified as Premiers or Grands Crus. They are located in the CĂŽte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims regions. The dominance and power comes from the Pinot Noir, which represents 68% of the blend. The finesse and elegance are achieved from a complement of 32% Chardonnay. The effervescence is both delicate and long lasting. The bouquet is fine and complex, strong in the aromas of dried fruits and flowers. There is an elegant harmony in the nose around toast and brioche notes. In the mouth, the wine is firm and well structured, with masses of substance and refinement. Such wine accompanies perfectly lobsters, scallops and sea fish.
