Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs — a vertical comparison of this great Champagne

Image
In Champagne, the term Blanc de Blancs designates Champagnes made only from Chardonnay grapes. A classic Blanc de Blancs is restrained and elegant when young, yet with ageing it develops a mouth-coating brioche richness that overlays an intense expression of fruitiness. Pol Roger’s vintage Blanc de Blanc is produced in small quantities from Grand Cru vineyards. Interestingly, it is never produced in magnums, just single bottles. Pol Roger — Blanc de Blancs 1996 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Fully mature, rich and complex with a long finish. Apricots, brioche, bready with a hint of yeast. Very good! Vintage 1996 1998 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Balanced fruitiness and still fresh, powerful with a buttery and mineral nose. Big champagne! Vintage 1998 1999 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs. Pol Roger launched its deluxe flagship at Churchill’s birthplace Blenheim Palace in 1984, with the 1975 vintage, in commemorative homage to his love of its wines, and it remains the only prestige cuvée Champagne named after a foreigner. The friendship between Champagne-house Pol Roger and Sir Winston Churchill dates back to the 1928 vintage. Sir Winston Churchill had a lifelong “attachment” to Pol Roger ch

This is one of my absolute favourite champagnes . Fresh and clean on the palate and made to age for many years. Aromas of fresh citrus and green apples and lots of chalky mineral notes. L ayers upon layers of concentrated sweet fruit with a generous mousse.  Will hold for many years, drink over the next 10 years? Copyright Per Kamperin (My collection.) Winemakers notes The 1996 Salon is a pale yellow color with a touch of green. It is clear and lively, with fine, persistent bubbles and a stunning bouquet. Initially, the nose offers hints of green apple, which soon develop into lemon and grapefruit combined with pear and kiwi notes. The wine is complex and refreshing on the palate, displaying a burst of minerality. This is a well-made, rich, powerful Champagne, all-encompassing yet subtle, with contained strength. According to Didier Depond, Salon should be served in a tulip-shaped glass instead of a traditional champagne flute. “Because of the richness and compl
