Krug 1988

Image
At the House of Krug each Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, created to reveal the expression of a year’s specific character, captured uniquely as only the House of Krug can. There are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages. Upright structure and the solid acidity not found in particularly hot years, Krug 1988 reveals sharp purity. In the mouth, it is full of sensations: orange blossom, dry figs, ripe quince, and mild spices such as cinnamon and ginger. With a crystal finish and lingering palate, Krug 1988 is a treasure trove of emblematic savoir-faire from the House of Krug. Krug 1988 The first of the trilogy of Krug Vintages of 1988, 89 and 90 – a feat never again repeated at the House of Krug – 1988 is undoubtedly the subtle elder sister of 1989’s louder, younger exuberance. Krug 1988 stayed a bit close for quite some time, nearly austere at the beginning but today after more than 20 years in Krug’s cellars it is entering into a new, expressive phase, it is opening up beau...

1996 Bollinger Champagne R.D., disgorged Feb 07. Rich, very 'Bolly', complex, ripe and slightly oxidative. Front Label Bottle

Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill - Vintage 1995

Image
Honey, mushrooms, brioche and perhaps a hint of buttered popcorn — complex with a hint of autumn. Fully mature. Acidity and bubbles fading, near it’s peak. Great Champagne,  Copyright — Per Kamperin Winemaker Notes: The Vintage Brut 1995 is rich, powerful and flavorsome with an expressive palate. In style and qualityis not unlike one of its illustrious predecessors, the 1985. It has an intense, radiant golden color with traces of warm amber. There is a persistent stream of very fine, regular sized bubbles that rise upwards to a delicate, full durable ‘cordon’ at the rim. Initially discreet, even closed, its nose combine an extreme delicacy with subtle complexity, skillfully combining some gentle, leafy aromas (straw, cut flowers) and equally understated dried fruit aromas (almonds, apricots) before blossoming into an abundance of competing aromas: fruity (fruit candy), lactic (beurrre noisette) and spicy (mille-fleurs honey, ginge...

1999 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut

Image
A wine of pure pleasure and a sophisticated gastronomic wine, Cristal is both powerful and delicate, combining subtlety and precision — Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Master This Champagne is a favorite of mine. Powerful with fine bubbles. Balanced, bready, apples, nuts and brioche, with a slight hint of earthy nuances, a bit reductive. Drink now IMO . Cristal - Vintage 1999 The House (Winemaker’s Notes) Our House’s most famous wine was created in 1876 to satisfy the demanding tastes of Tsar Alexander II. The emperor asked Louis Roederer to reserve the House’s best cuvée for him every year. He was particularly fond of the House’s wine. To distinguish this cuvée, this exceptional champagne came in a flat-bottomed, transparent lead-crystal bottle. The new brand was named after this precious material, which is particularly transparent and luminous. Produced uniquely during the best years, when the Chardonnay (around 40%) and Pinot noir (around 60%) grapes have at...

1998 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses.

Image
Maison Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses comes from one of the few enclosed sites of the Champagne region. The 1998 vintage is 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay. Label — Copyright Per Kamperin Despite extremely contrasted weather conditions, the 1998 Clos de Goisses is a powerful, rich champagne. This intense golden champagne revealed interesting and complex aromas of ripe white fruits, flowers, mineral, some biscuits and, surpringly, a slight hint of mushrooms. Slightly oxidative with a long finish. This wine still needs time, but is definitely complete already, just between ”freshness” and ”maturity”. Bottle — Copyright Per Kamperin Winemakers notes (general): Clos des Goisses is the most powerful of all Champagnes. It is produced using grapes grown on a unique, pure chalk hillside with a 45° slope facing due south, in Mareuil-sur-Ay. Its name certainly reveals its true nature; in the old Champagne dialect, Gois or Goisse means a very steep slope. This ...

Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs — a vertical comparison of this great Champagne

Image
In Champagne, the term Blanc de Blancs designates Champagnes made only from Chardonnay grapes. A classic Blanc de Blancs is restrained and elegant when young, yet with ageing it develops a mouth-coating brioche richness that overlays an intense expression of fruitiness. Pol Roger’s vintage Blanc de Blanc is produced in small quantities from Grand Cru vineyards. Interestingly, it is never produced in magnums, just single bottles. Pol Roger — Blanc de Blancs 1996 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Fully mature, rich and complex with a long finish. Apricots, brioche, bready with a hint of yeast. Very good! Vintage 1996 1998 Pol Roger Blanc de Chardonnay. Balanced fruitiness and still fresh, powerful with a buttery and mineral nose. Big champagne! Vintage 1998 1999 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Blancs. Perfect drinking now, but could be enjoyed over the next 10 years. Lively bubbles, white peach, ...

1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill.

Image
Pol Roger launched its deluxe flagship at Churchill’s birthplace Blenheim Palace in 1984, with the 1975 vintage, in commemorative homage to his love of its wines, and it remains the only prestige cuvée Champagne named after a foreigner. That first Cuvée Sir Winston was made only in magnum and sold only in the UK; standard bottles, and sales to the USA and elsewhere, came only from the 1979 vintage on. Each declared vintage numbers only 25,000–50,000 bottles—a tiny quantity by comparison. 1988 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Vintage..

Image
1988 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Vintage Rare. Rather dark colour and very little fizz. Mature, balanced and complex with a slight hint of mushrooms. Very good 🍾😊, but the drinking window is closing...   Rare Vintage 1988 This Vintage is made up from twenty villages all classified as Premiers or Grands Crus. They are located in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims regions. The dominance and power comes from the Pinot Noir, which represents 68% of the blend. The finesse and elegance are achieved from a complement of 32% Chardonnay. The effervescence is both delicate and long lasting. The bouquet is fine and complex, strong in the aromas of dried fruits and flowers. There is an elegant harmony in the nose around toast and brioche notes. In the mouth, the wine is firm and well structured, with masses of substance and refinement. Such wine accompanies perfectly lobsters, scallops and sea fish. After a few more years of ageing, one would not hesit...
